Stella Maris Cares for Seafarers Far from Home

This weekend we celebrate Sea Sunday, and Stella Maris (the largest ship-visiting network in the world) has an aim to improve the lives

of seafarers and fishers through our network of local chaplains and seafarer centres, expert information, advocacy, and spiritual support.

Today the Gospel reminds us about the love and care that the Good Samaritan showed to the stranger that he found upon the road.

For seafarers and fishers, Stella Maris is that Good Samaritan.

Robert King, Stella Maris Regional Port Chaplain, recalled when a fisher fled his boat after allegedly being abused by the captain, and ended up stranded at Buchanan Street bus station in Glasgow. Robert was informed of his plight and went to find him. “I quickly identified the fisher, who was from Ghana, sitting on a bench looking scared and lost. He had no money and was so grateful to see a friendly face. By now it was after 6 pm and a storm was raging. Stella Maris paid for a hotel room for the fisher to spend the night. He was glad to be away from the bus station and in the comfort of the hotel. I made sure he had a phone charger so he could keep in touch with his family and myself, and I gave him some money for essentials. Because of the storm, he had to spend a second night in the hotel. Acting on advice from the International Transport Workers Federation, I persuaded the fisher to return to Campbeltown, where his boat was anchored, to report the alleged abuse by the captain to the local police station, which he did.” A resolution was reached, and the fisher has now started working on a different vessel in Scotland. “He was very grateful for the assistance that I gave him,” said Robert. These simple acts of kindness by Stella Maris port chaplains and ship visitors mean so much to seafarers who are far from home and feeling isolated. Let us also on this Sea Sunday pray for seafarers, fishers, and the work of Stella Maris. More stories can be read from the Archdiocese’s website:

The Most Precious Blood of Jesus (4) Although we, as children of God, should let ourselves be attracted and united to the most Precious Blood because It is the fountain of all graces and good things. But do you know there is someone who fears the Precious Blood and flee in terror from It? Yes, is the devil. Why? Because the Precious Blood of Jesus is so powerful that Satan and all his angels were thrown down, as we can see in the Bible: "...for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony..." (Revelation 12:10-11) Also in the Old Testament, we read that the Israelites put the blood of the lamb on the doorposts and lintels of their houses at Passover in order for their firstborn to be spared from death when God striked Egypt that same night. This is a prefigurement and a symbol that through the Precious Blood of the Spotless Holy Lamb of God our souls can be free from the devil's slavery and eternal death. God Loves us and wants us to come back to Him and share His eternal happiness, Satan is the enemy of God who wants to bring us down to eternal perdition and be his slave forever. But the Precious Blood of Jesus is a powerful weapon against Satan, because after we have sinned and wants to go back to God, the devil will show us God's Justice and discourage us with fear, yet the Crucifix reminds us of God's Merciful Love, as if saying to all those souls who are feeling guilty and burden after sinned: "Look at Me, for your sake I came down from My Throne in Heaven, took your human nature and shed all My Blood on this Cross to plead for your mercy. Why do you doubt I am not willing to forgive you? Do not despair, since I have not abandoned you. Come to me, as I invite you to receive this Sacrament of Reconciliation, so I can let My own Precious Blood to clean your soul and let it become beautiful once again, so I can strengthen you from sinning again. My Precious Blood is your victory over demons, your courage, your consolation, your hope and salvation. Do not let My Blood be wasted."

Draw near to your servants, O Lord, and answer their prayers with unceasing kindness, that, for those who glory in you as their Creator and guide, you may restore what you have created and keep safe what you have restored. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen

The Most Precious Blood of Jesus (3) On the Mount Calvary, after Jesus got stripped off His clothes, this Cross that was laid in front of His eyes, does He not know that It was a representation of cruelty, shamefulness and injustice? Yes, He knew better than anyone else. Yet, He most willingly to be nailed onto It, and so to pour out His Precious Blood. From then on, this Cross becomes a true sign of Love, Forgiveness and Salvation for us until the end of time. But that is not all, after Jesus gave up His Spirit on the Cross, His Most Sacred Heart was pierced by a lance from the side, blood and water gushed forth from it - this is the origin and growth of the Church. "For it was from the side of Christ as he slept the sleep of death upon the cross that there came forth the 'wondrous sacrament of the whole Church.'" As Eve was formed from the sleeping Adam's side, so the Church was born from the pierced heart of Christ hanging dead on the cross." (CCC #766) Jesus, with His own Most Precious Blood bought the Church and made her His Holy Bride. He died, so she can be born. Jesus Christ Our Lord becomes the Church's Bridegroom and they become one body, one flesh. And we, members of the Church, become part of His Body. He Loves us, just as He Loves His Bride. He looks after us, just as His Beloved children. He nourishes us everyday, with His own Most Sacred Body and Most Precious Blood through our daily receiving of the Holy Eucharist, so our souls can be refreshed and strengthened and saved from dying of spiritual starvation. Many people in Jesus' time cannot understand when Jesus said to them: "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I in him." (John 6:56) But just like Jesus describe Himself as the vine and we are the branches, which means we all need to share the same food, nutrients and water, in order for us grow and flourish; and like all cells share the same flowing blood within the body, thus without Him to nourish us with His very Self, we will wither and die. Behold, on the front of the main altar a bas-relief carving of the Lamb of God shedding hid blood for us (Book of Revelation) can be seen, similarly it is portrayed in the holy vision at Knock, in Ireland. It reminds us that from this Blood flows all graces for each one of us down the ages, It is the courage of martyrs, the strength of Confessors, the purity of Virgins, the help of those in peril, the relief of the burdened, the hope of the penitent, the consolation of the dying… Therefore, let us approach and receive the Eucharist and Precious Blood every time with love and reverence.

One of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.’ And he said to them, ‘When you pray, say: ‘Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.’ (Luke 11:1-4)

Sunday 27 July 2025 Blessed are those who have not lost hope (cf. Sir 14:2) Pope Leo has given us his message for this Day:"...The Jubilee we are now celebrating helps us to realise that hope is a constant source of joy, whatever our age. When that hope has also been tempered by fire over the course of a long life, it proves a source of deep happiness. Sacred Scripture offers us many examples of men and women whom the Lord called late in life to play a part in his saving plan. We can think of Abraham and Sarah, who, advanced in years, found it hard to believe when God promised them a child...Old age, barrenness and physical decline apparently blocked any hope for life and fertility in these men and women...Yet whenever we think that things cannot change, the Lord surprises us with an act of saving power… The life of the Church and the world can only be understood in light of the passage of generations. Embracing the elderly helps us to understand that life is more than just the present moment, and should not be wasted in superficial encounters and fleeting relationships. Instead, life is constantly pointing us toward the future... If it is true that the weakness of the elderly needs the strength of the young, it is equally true that the inexperience of the young needs the witness of the elderly in order to build the future with wisdom. How often our grandparents have been for us examples of faith and devotion, civic virtue and social commitment, memory and perseverance amid trials! The precious legacy that they have handed down to us with hope and love will always be a source of gratitude and a summons to perseverance…” You can view the full Papal message on: www.cbcew.org.uk/ popes-message-to-grandparents-and-the-elderly-2025/

Join the Fightback! As you probably know, in the space of just one week at the end of June, MPs voted to legalise assisted suicide and to decriminalise abortion, allowing for abortion up to birth. These are threats that we should all care deeply about. SPUC invites you to join in the fightback, to make your voice heard and to stand up for the most vulnerable. Please fill out one of the postcards at Church porch, and SPUC will send you information about what you can do for the cause.
